To Travel is to take a journey into yourself

Harry Potter locations to visit while in Scotland

Harry Potter locations to visit while in Scotland

I grew up, like a lot of my generation, with the wonderful saga that is Harry Potter. Read all the books, seen all the movies, bought lots of, I admit, unnecessary merch. So you might say I am a bit of a ‘connoisseur’ when it comes to this fictional world of witches, wizards and dark lords…

Hogwarts, the prestigious school where all the 90’s kids like myself wanted to go, is supposed to be located in Scotland, and so it comes to no surprise that many Scottish locations can be spotted in the Harry Potter movies.

The Harry Potter maniac that I am had to find out about all the locations used for the movies and visit them immediately.

Glenfinnan Viaduct / Hogwarts Express

Have you received your letter of admission to Hogwarts? Yes? Good.

Ye’re a wizard *insert your name*!

Now time to come aboard the Hogwarts Express on the most amazing journey of your life.

However in the non magical world, the muggles call it the Jacobite steam train and if you’d like to pretend you are ‘en route’ for Hogwarts you can actually ride it and feel like a proper wizarding student.

Take the Hogwarts Express

You can also admire it from afar and soak in the beautiful scottish landscape. There is a specific scene in Harry Potter and the Chamber Of Secrets that you can actually spot. This is the scene where Harry and Ron, having missed the train, are riding the magical flying car and trying to find it.

Loch Shiel / The Great Lake or Black Lake

This majestuous loch has been used for the Fifth movie, The Goblet Of Fire, as the Great Lake of Hogwarts. It is said to be full of magical creatures such has Grindylows (vicious little water demons), merpeople and a semi-domesticated giant squid. It has been used as the setting for the second task of the Triwizard tournament in the Goblet Of Fire.

I was really lucky when I went to visit it because not only was it not raining (Which is kind of a miracle in Scotland) but there was a little bit of a mist which made my experience all the more magical. I really felt like I was transported into J.K Rowling’s world.

Glencoe / Hogwarts and Hagrid’s Hut

This is where some of the filming for the third movie, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of askaban took place.

I had the chance to walk the same path as Hermione, Ron and Harry and had a glimpse of where Hagrid, the lovable half-giant, lived. He had quite the view from his garden.
